What Are You Trying To Prove

Lyrics

Have you ever seen someone so alone
so used to being that way
With no one nowhere to care?
Then you realize how lucky you are
There’s people all around you
And you tell me that you’ll go crazy, well I know..

But you hold on to your past
You make it last and you make it work for you
You hold on to your past
You never let it go

They say the higher up you go
The more you keep to yourself
Off inside your head, no one knows…
They say that money can’t buy happiness
But it did for you
Or at least that’s what you said to me

But you hold on to your past
You make it last and you make it work for you
You hold on to your past
You never let it go

But what are you trying to prove?
What are you trying to prove to me?
What are you trying to prove?
What are you trying to prove?

Background

In college I was part of the band Maxwell Grant. We played our own music, recorded a few demo tapes, played a few gigs, and mostly just had a lot of fun. I wrote this song back in those days, and it felt like it fit in well with the other songs on this album.

I learned how to play music with those guys. I studied music in high school and college, but I LEARNED how to play music with those guys. I have lots of fond memories of those days.

In terms of what the song is about, it’s about fame. Not that I’d know anything about that, but if I wrote only what I knew about, I’d be writing songs about doing laundry and sitting at a desk coding web pages.
